Midget
“Rec” League Changes
There has been some confusion regarding the change from “Midget
Recreation” or “Midget International” to the newly
created City League. This document is to provide more information
for parents with questions on this issue.
Six years ago, after evaluations were complete, midget level players
were placed on Midget International teams after the competitive
teams were selected. Those who were not selected for the competitive
level or those who chose not to tryout were placed on Midget International
teams who played each other internally (usually 5-6 teams). The
process and results had not changed from years past, but there were
a number of coaches and parents that realized that the players were
playing at a level with no structure or direction and were dissatisfied.
Recognizing this was a concern, the Reedville Board of Directors
acted.
The following year a new Reedville Board position was developed
called the “Director of Recreational Programs.” Since
then the programs for the Pee Wee, Rookie and Midget International
programs have been enhanced significantly both financially and operationally
under the guidance of the Director. Improvements like the Rookie
and Pee-Wee “Jamboree,” the Rookie and Midget International
Championship Tournaments and improved fields have occurred over
the past six years. A major part of this change has affected the
Midget International teams. In the past, Midget International games
were umpired by parents, included a T-shirt and hat for a uniform
and were played on inferior fields. Now for the past several years
the Midget International level has included umpires at every game
and full “competitive” uniform, with sized hats, jerseys
and pants with the teams playing JBO National level rules on fields
that receive a much higher standard of care. We have had many of
our Midget International teams go to National JBO Tournaments and
win trophies!
Ultimately the Midget International level has developed into a
program that some families prefer. It is competitive, but it is
also more instructional. The season is shorter and there is more
focus on baseball rather than playing in multiple tournaments or
going to State. Not to disparage the competitive levels, they have
fun as well, but sometimes the focus at the competitive level is
less about fun and more about competition. Not every child (or parent)
is ready for this or interested in playing that type of baseball.
This year, the Midget International or Midget Recreational program
has evolved once again. Rather than just playing the same 5 or 6
teams over and over, Reedville has joined forces with Hillsboro
Baseball Association (HBBA) to create the newly formed “City
League.” Starting this year, our City League teams will play
against one another and teams from the HBBA at a few different locations
in Hillsboro. Traveling will still be at a minimum, but now the
League will include the “City League Championship Tournament”
with all of the teams from the League competing. The focus will
still be on fun and learning, but now there will be many different
teams to play. Additionally, our City League teams will continue
to be allowed to play in “JBO National” level tournaments
throughout the Northwest if coaches and parents choose to do so.
We want to make it clear for all Reedville Parents, the City League
still functions as our “Midget Recreational or International”
program. Kids who choose not to tryout or who are not selected to
play on competitive teams will play as part of the City League.
Additionally, if all goes well this season, we will begin to offer
a Junior City League option in 2011. This is all part of our goal
to make Reedville the best program available for all levels of play.
If you have further questions regarding this program please feel
free to contact our Director of Recreation Mike Gillard at recreation@reedvillebaseball.com
thanks.
